Haitian Creole Tutor

Haitian Creole Tutor

Project: EqualHealth works to inspire, empower, and support the development of leaders among Haiti’s next generation of health professionals. As we grow and strive to create authentic partnerships with our colleagues in Haiti and domestically, we are increasingly interested in ensuring that communication is conducted in the most common language used by Haitians. To that end, we are creating ways for those who stand in solidarity with the Haitian community to learn to speak Haitian Creole. In addition to our Haitian Creole courses, we are looking for individuals to be Haitian Creole Volunteer Tutors in order to provide one-on-one guidance for Creole learners.

Applicant: The ideal applicant will be outgoing, comfortable in multicultural and multilingual settings, organized, responsible and able to work independently. They will be fluent in oral and written English and Haitian Creole. The ideal candidate will have a background in adult or language education or formal experience with tutoring.

The applicant must be based out of Boston, or able to easily commute for meetings with their Creole learners. The applicant will have excellent electronic communication habits, with daily access to email and comfort with texting, skype or other video/chat communication formats.

Supervisor: Roxane Handal, Creole Course Coordinator

Volunteer Logistics: The internship will last for a period of one year. Time commitment will be approximately 5 hours a week. Scheduling will be arranged between the tutor and their learner(s). The volunteer will be given several learners and will be responsible for evaluating their baseline Creole knowledge and creating a learning plan with each individual. The learner will pay an hourly tutoring fee that is a donation to EqualHealth. This is a volunteer, unpaid position for the Tutor.

EqualHealth is committed to helping individuals attain their academic goals, and to that end we are willing to work with those currently enrolled in college or graduate programs to meet requirements for practicum or other commitments in terms of supervision, documentation and time requirements.

How to apply:

Please send (1) a copy of your CV and (2) a cover letter to cfox@equalhealth.org. In your CV please address language skills and level of fluency (oral, reading and writing). In your cover letter, please address your interest in our organization, as well as your ability to meet our time commitment.
