Our partner organizations in Haiti have asked for visiting professionals from a wide variety of specialties to travel to Haiti and provide short educational sessions in Haiti at medical schools, hospitals and universities. Our inaugural visiting instructors spent two weeks in March 2012 teaching an extremely popular course on Social Determinants of Health at the Universite de la Fondation Aristide (UniFA) Medical School. Since then, we have expanded the program, teaching courses on First Aid and CPR, Research Methods, Neurology, HIV/AIDs, and Tuberculosis. Since we began, the Visiting Professor Program has reached more than 2,300 Haitian medical and nursing students and medical professionals at multiple hospitals and universities around Haiti. We are asking health care professionals who are willing to work in solidarity with their colleagues in Haiti to register with EqualHealth in order to match your professional interests with the academic needs as defined by our partners.
Become a Visiting Professor
Our vision is a self-sustaining Haitian Medical Education system that is a source of pride for Haiti, equips Haitian health care providers to provide high quality care to all Haitians and is built on a foundation of equity and collaboration.
To achieve this vision, our partner organizations in Haiti have asked for visiting professionals of a wide variety of specialties to travel to Haiti and provide educational sessions in Haiti at medical schools, hospitals and universities. Therefore, we are asking health care professionals who are willing to work in solidarity with their colleagues in Haiti to register with EqualHealth in order to match your professional interests with the academic needs as defined by our partner organizations.
In addition to addressing academic gaps in the medical educational system, this program is also designed to provide and young Haitian professionals with a one-on-one mentorship for the duration of the Visiting Professor’s visit. A student or junior physician may be paired with the Visiting Professor with the expectation that they are provided with opportunities to serve as teaching assistants, co-lecturers or discussion facilitators as appropriate. Our hope is to use the expertise, passion and dedication of the Visiting Professor as a way to help ‘teach the teacher’ and provide direct leadership development experience for the mentee. In return, the mentee will provide logistical, cultural and academic assistance to the visiting professor.
The visiting professor program began in 2012. We have a database of requests from Haitian institutions, such as UniFA, Saint Boniface Hospital, Partners in Health and others, and find appropriate matches from our volunteer Visiting Professor registry. Preference will be given to those who are fluent in French, Haitian Creole or Spanish and who have previous experience working in developing world settings.
