Nobody is Free Until Haiti is Free: Transnational Solidarity Against Deportations

Our collectives know that the current treatment of Haitian immigrants is a profound continuation of the punishment of Haitians who freed themselves from slavery and founded the first Black republic in the western hemisphere. The existence of Haiti and of Haitians is a constant reminder of the power of Black radical imagination.
Haiti
Currently, the airport in Cap-Haïtien receives the majority of international flights, as the airport in Port-au-Prince is inoperative due to insecurity. As a result, many deportation flights from the United States are redirected to Cap-Haïtien. This situation creates significant risks for Haitian nationals who are deported there, people who fled the country because their lives were threatened and some who have no anchor in Haiti. For many, reuniting with their relatives requires travelling to other departments, often via the route connecting Cap-Haïtien to Port-au-Prince through Mirebalais, an area currently under gang control, making the journey extremely dangerous.
United States
The direct assault on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will leave more than 350,000 Haitians currently with legal status and working in the United States with their status revoked. The acceleration of anti-Blackness toward Haitians in the US is manifesting in increasing kidnappings in broad daylight or increasing detentions of Haitian immigrants in prisons and immigrant detention centers and more and more deportation flights to Haiti on a regular basis.
Dominican Republic
In the Dominican Republic, the government announced a quota of 10,000 weekly deportations in October 2024. Furthermore, the immigration protocol for hospitals, implemented in April of this year, orders healthcare personnel to perform immigration control tasks and report Haitian patients to the General Directorate of Migration (DGM), effectively carrying out their immigration detention within the hospitals themselves.
The community impact is wide and deep, ranging from widespread fear, trauma, and anxiety to families hiding, children not attending school, women left alone to sustain families, and pregnant women and newborns being detained and deported only hours after delivery.
Haitian Bridge Alliance, GARR, El Colectivo HaitianosRD and EqualHealth continue to organize globally on the foundational belief that “nobody is free until Haiti is free.” We move globally first with the aim to shift the collective consciousness around the root causes of the forced displacement of the Haitian people. Secondly, we organize to build solidarity towards the conditions of Haitian immigrants. Treatment that is rooted in anti-Blackness and collective punishment for Haitians freeing themselves from the chains of slavery. Treatments that perpetuate inequality, where these people are being placed into more precarious living conditions. We remain confident and grounded in our values, denouncing these acts of injustices.
The funds we collect will go towards paying for health and material needs for the concerned people or family members left behind, along with the continued documentation of the violations of human rights to denounce globally what is happening. Additionally, funds will mobilize healthcare workers through the campaign to document and expose community trauma, launch a global awareness campaign highlighting deportation as a human rights crisis with serious health implications, and continue to strengthen partnerships with labor organizers and trusted legal networks.

El impacto comunitario es amplio y profundo, y abarca desde el miedo generalizado, el trauma y la ansiedad hasta familias que se esconden, niñes que no asisten a la escuela, mujeres que se quedan solas para mantener a sus familias, y mujeres embarazadas y recién nacides que son detenides y deportades apenas unas horas después del parto.
Haitian Bridge Alliance, GARR, El Colectivo HaitianosRD y EqualHealth siguen organizándose a nivel mundial, basándose en la convicción fundamental de que «Nadie es libre hasta que Haití sea libre». Actuamos primero a nivel global con el objetivo de cambiar la conciencia colectiva en torno a las causas fundamentales del desplazamiento forzado del pueblo haitiano. En segundo lugar, nos organizamos para generar solidaridad con la situación de les inmigrantes haitianes. Un trato que tiene sus raíces en la anti-negritud y en el castigo colectivo hacia les haitianes que se liberaron de las cadenas de la esclavitud. Un trato que perpetúa la desigualdad al someter a estas personas a condiciones de vida cada vez más precarias. Nos mantenemos firmes y fieles a nuestros valores, denunciando estos actos de injusticia.
Los fondos que recaudemos se destinarán a cubrir las necesidades de salud y materiales de las personas afectadas o de les familiares que quedaron atrás, así como a la documentación continua de las violaciones de los derechos humanos para denunciar a nivel mundial lo que está sucediendo. Además, a través de la campaña movilizaremos a les trabajadores de la salud para que documenten y den a conocer el trauma que sufre la comunidad, lanzaremos una campaña de concientización global que destaque que la deportación es una crisis de derechos humanos con graves consecuencias para la salud y seguiremos fortaleciendo las alianzas con organizadores sindicales y redes legales de confianza.
Nos hemos fijado la meta de recaudar 20.000 dólares en los próximos tres meses. En un modelo de ayuda mutua, tu contribución no es solo un regalo, es un acto de justicia. Es la diferencia entre mantener a una familia unida o verla separada por una frontera.
